Showing Up for Those You Love

I’m going to ask you a question that I want you to take very seriously…

Please don’t just brush this off.

Deal?

Here goes…

Can you show up in the best way for the people and things you care about most if you’re unhealthy?

Let me quickly define unhealthy since it’s such a broad term.

For the sake of this question:

  • Sick
  • Tired
  • Stressed Out
  • Weak
  • In Pain
  • Move poorly
  • Low Self-esteem

So, if you’re frequently any of those things…

Can you possibly show up in the best way for the people and things you care most about?

I ask this because it’s been on my mind a lot lately, even for myself.

You see, being a good husband, dog dad, business owner, employer, coach, colleague, friend, etc. are all important things to me.

Let’s take being a good husband for this example…

Can I show up in the best way for Janell if I’m frequently any of those things on the list above?

The answer is pretty obvious.  NO.

How about you?

While I’m not a parent (to humans anyway ;-b), I’ve trained a LOT of parents over the last 21 years.  I can’t tell you how many conversations I’ve had with parents who can put a check next to all ALL those symptoms…

Ironically, they all think the same way – “I’m doing this to myself FOR my kids.”

They might not use those exact words, but that’s pretty much what their thinking boils down to…because, in that way, they’re great parents!

Unfortunately, their thinking (and subsequently their behavior) doesn’t actually produce the results they’re going for…

Here’s what I mean:

Every parent I’ve ever spoken to has said they want to provide a better life for their child than the one they had – not necessarily because their childhood was bad.  It’s just natural to want to do so.

So, in their quest to provide, they SACRIFICE themselves.

They put their personal wants/needs/desires on hold to put their kids wants/needs/desires first.

Inevitably, this sacrifice takes its toll on the parents…and kids – I’ll get there in a moment.

A perfect example is exercise – it’s typically the first thing to go…

Whether it’s lack of time because of all the kids’ activities or lack of money because…well kids cost money, right?…the list of reasons stacks up against the parent.

Years of not exercising, which usually couples itself with poor nutrition habits, leads to feeling:

  • Sick
  • Tired
  • Stressed Out
  • Weak
  • In Pain
  • Move poorly
  • Low Self-esteem

But, your kids are getting those better lives, right?

Are they?

Did you ever stop to wonder, would their lives be even better if YOU were better?

Could you be an even better parent if you were at YOUR best?

How would you show up if you were the BEST version of yourself?

Interesting question, right?

Here’s something else to think about…

How awesome is it going to be to see your kids turn around and do the exact same thing you did? After all, monkey see, monkey do.

After all that sacrifice on your part, they grow up to be parents who are:

  • Sick
  • Tired
  • Stressed Out
  • Weak
  • In Pain
  • Move poorly
  • Low Self-esteem

And, here’s one more because I see this a lot with my clients…

Do you want to put your kids through the awful experience of having to take care of YOU in the future because you didn’t today?

I know this may not have been the most pleasant newsletter I’ve ever written, and it may have brought up a variety of emotions – possibly even anger towards me – but I hope it makes it really clear that…
to show up in the best way for the people and things you care about most, you have to first show up for YOURSELF.

HAVE FAITH & TAKE ACTION!
