Back in the Saddle Again

Oh, that first day back after vacation…

Don’t get me wrong; I’m looking forward to getting back into the swing of things, especially some projects Janell and I are working on…but that first day back always hurts a little.  There was definitely a little internal conversation about skipping my workout and going back to bed when the alarm went off at 4:44 am…

But, I didn’t.  Partly from the guilt that Janell had to get up to open The Club today. ;-b

But, also because I knew it would make the transition back to a normal schedule much better.

It did.

That’s the thing about routines – when you stick to a supportive one, things just seem to work better, right?

Then why is it so hard to get into a “good” routine and so easy to get out of one?

Honestly, I don’t know.

I’m sure it’s got a lot to do with mindset and habits, as well as our body’s natural tendency to want to conserve energy…

What I do know is that, for me, being in a good routine is critical to my success in pretty much every area of my life.  That’s actually why I spend a fair amount of time thinking about my various routines and looking at ways to tweak them to make the work even better.

One routine that I feel pretty darn good about is my morning routine, which includes my meditation, workout, and walk with Badger.  In fact, I just made a tweak to my workout that I’m excited about!

That morning routine definitely helps set me up for a successful day…

Well, it helps most when I’m sticking to another one of my important routines – my Friday planning session.  That’s where I sit down and look at my calendar for the next few weeks to see what’s coming up and then plug in the various tasks the following week that will make those planned objectives a success.

Admittedly, that routine has been slipping recently.  Janell and I talked about that actually. We’re going to experiment with a different time of day and do it together to see if that works better for both of us.

We’ll see…

Again, it’s never perfect, and it has to be dynamic.  As things in life change, our routines often have to change with them.  The key is to make tweaks that work for the season of life you’re in rather just abandoning good routines (like working out regularly) altogether.

Let me know your thoughts, as well if you’ve got a good routine that you’re really happy with.  Also, let me know where you could use some guidance…
