37: How to Evaluate Your Goals


Do you periodically evaluate your goals? What tools do you use to measure your success? As you may know, we don’t create New Year’s resolutions, but we do set goals each year. The summer is a good time to evaluate how our yearly goals are going. I like to do weekly, monthly, and yearly reviews in addition to this half-year review. In this episode, you’ll learn how to evaluate your goals and what you can do if you are falling behind or if things aren’t going according to plan.

How to evaluate your goals

What is working?

Whether or not you are on pace to achieve your goal for the year, consider what is working about your goal first. If your goal is to lose weight, then think about the good habits that you have formed. Did you start drinking more water? Are you drinking less alcohol? Have you started eating more vegetables? Or have you been exercising consistently? Even if you aren’t where you want to be there are some improvements that you have made in your life. You can also consider how you are measuring success. Weight loss shouldn’t be the only factor by which you measure your goal. Think about the different ways you can measure your improvement. What have you been doing to get closer to your goals?

What’s not working?

After identifying what is working you need to also consider what isn’t working for you. To continue with the weight loss example, you can look for inconsistencies with diet and exercise. Are you inconsistent on the weekend? Evaluate and think about how you can change your habits. My schedule wasn’t working out for me and I realized I wasn’t using my time efficiently. So I considered what was working, what was not, and what I could change. You may also consider your environment and organization. I always try to consider other areas of my life to see how they affect me and my goals. What are you doing that runs contrary to achieving your goals?

What changes do you need to make?

Now that you have identified what is working and what isn’t you can consider making changes. Think about what you can change in your schedule and your habits to get you closer to your goals. When I realized that my schedule wasn’t working for me I knew there were some things I could change and others I couldn’t. I started by making a couple of changes in my schedule and then I will reevaluate at a later date.

You can also consider reassessing whether the goal is still working for you. You may want to let it go and pivot in a whole different direction. The people that can pivot and go with the flow are the ones that are the happiest and most successful. Have you ever realized that a goal you made no longer works for your life? Who can help you achieve your goals?

There is often a stigma that comes with asking for help but that’s crazy. No successful person has gotten where they are without help. Think about who can help you achieve your goals. Who can provide you with the support and guidance you need? Do you need a mentor or an accountability partner? If you don’t know who might be able to help you then you can start seeking help by listening to podcasts and reading books. Many people think they shouldn’t have to pay for help, but you would be surprised at the progress you can make by getting a bit of help.
