What are the 2 states of being?

We are always in one of the 2 states of being. We can never be in both at the same time, it’s either 1 or the other. There is the suffering state (or the sympathetic state) and the beautiful state (or the parasympathetic state). The suffering state is when one feels stress, overwhelm, anxiety, sadness, depression, jealousy, worry, or rage. You can also consider the suffering state as your fight or flight response. The beautiful state is filled with joy, compassion, gratitude, calm, curiosity, optimism. The parasympathetic state is where you are creative, you can make decisions easily, and life seems to flow. Everything you want to achieve in life lies in the parasympathetic state. Most of us have an emotional home in one state or the other, which do you spend the most time in?

What state of being do you spend the most time in?

Now that you know about the 2 states of being you can consider your daily life. What state of being do you spend the most time in? Analyze your mental state over the next few days and consider how often you flow from one state of being to the other. Everything you want to achieve and do in life lies in the beautiful state, so it makes sense to try to be in the beautiful state as much as possible.

What are the repercussions of being in the sympathetic state for a prolonged period?

The sympathetic state is also our fight or flight response. This state of being is an important part of keeping us safe if we need to respond quickly to danger. The body floods with glucose to give you the energy to either fight or flight. But if you don’t use that energy then insulin rushes in and uses that glucose to create fat storage. It then creates cortisol. We were never meant to be in the fight or flight state for long. It can wreak havoc on our bodies if we spend too much time in the suffering state. Your body still feels the effects of the suffering state long afterward if you have just been through a traumatic experience.

What can you do to decrease the amount of time spent in suffering?

You can never create or work through life’s challenges while in a suffering state. You have to be in a beautiful state to move your life forward. So it is important to be aware that you are in suffering. Once you become aware that you are in the suffering state you can try to change it. When you move into the sympathetic state try to stop and identify it. Pause for a moment and recognize where you are, give its name. Just by doing this it becomes much easier to change your state of being. Once you realize where you are then there are a number of things you can do to change. Try moving your body, go outside in nature, take a shower, all of these can help you to change your state of being.
